Why 'The Blue Egg'?

Updated: Jun 14, 2024

People ask where did the name, The Blue Egg, come from?
Before we moved onto our property in Borden, we lived on a few acres just out of the small and beautiful coastal city of Albany, and had backyard chickens - around 30 or so. They were a range of breeds, from Rhode Island Reds, to Australorps, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Polish Frizzles, French Wheaten Marans and Araucanas.
The Aracaunas lay blue eggs, and once you've collected one of these perfect beauties, you're generally hooked. Then the fun starts, with seeing what coloured eggs you can create by breeding your own chickens. It can become a bit of an obsession. If you know, you know!
When we decided to start farming pastured eggs on our farm, we thought that was going to be the end of our beautiful, blue eggs. But, then we found out there are commercial breeds that lay blue eggs - cue the Cream Legbar - yay!! They lay blue, green or olive eggs. And that's when we had the idea to include random blue eggs in our cartons of eggs. We hope that our customers will find them just as beautiful as we do!
Now we are waiting (im)patiently for our Legbar girls to start laying ...
You can be sure we'll tell you when they do!

The photo below shows some of our red and black Rhode Island Red hybrids, and the light brown cream Legbar.

A small disclaimer, our full business name is 'The Blue Egg Free Range Pastured Hens', because, annoyingly, 'The Blue Egg' is already the name of a business, that has little to do with eggs.
